7 Mistakes to avoid when relocating – Higgins Group

September 15th, 2017 | Higgins Group Real Estate

The process of relocating to a new house can leave you lost in a whirlwind of activity. There’s so much planning, organizing, and decision-making for you to deal with, which makes it easy to overlook quite a few things.

To help you avoid making costly errors during the relocation process, we’ve created a list of some of the common mistakes people experience when moving:

Relocation Tips

Failing to get info on your mover

Before you commit to any contract, it’s best to research thoroughly on your mover first. To avoid running into any issues, make sure they’re licensed by your state’s Department of Transportation, and they have a good record with the Better Business Bureau.

Overspending on packing

Don’t over think when it comes to packing – you don’t need fancy storage containers or other unnecessary materials. Newspaper, boxes, and a few rolls of packaging tape should be able to do the trick.

Including items that are too heavy in some boxes

If an item is too heavy, pack it in a separate box instead of throwing it in with other items. This will make it easier for you and your movers.

Failing to take measurements on your new home

Be sure to take measurements of the clearance space in your new home before moving day. The last thing you want to happen is to arrive at your new residence with all your stuff, only to discover some of your furniture won’t be able to fit through the front door.

Not labeling your boxes

Be sure to label all your boxes thoroughly. Include content information, special handling instructions, and the room its contents belong to.

Treating your movers poorly

Make it a point to introduce yourself to all members of the moving crew, and provide them with snacks and refreshments.

Forgetting to change your address

Remember to change your address even before you move. Check out this step-by-step guide from USA.gov.
