One of Greenwich’s best known attractions, the Bruce Museum has been consistently ranked by experts as one of the best museums in in Connecticut. Showcasing over 15,000 objects pertaining to art, science, and natural history, there is something for everyone in the Bruce Museum.
A little bit of history
There probably wouldn’t be a Bruce Museum today if it weren’t for Robert Moffat Bruce, an affluent textile merchant who bought a charming home (and its surrounding property) back in 1858. The home, which was originally built for historian, lawyer, and clergyman Francis Lister Hawks, was then deeded to the Town of Greenwich in 1858. Bruce said that the property can be used as “a natural history, historical, and art museum for the use and benefit of the public.” And so the Bruce Museum was born. It held its first exhibition in 1912, featuring works from the Greenwich Society of Artists.
The Bruce Museum of today
Today, the Bruce Museum has earned the reputation of being the best museum in Fairfield County by numerous local publications. Amid its permanent galleries are changing exhibitions, both of which aim to broaden visitors’ regional and global perspectives.
The Bruce Museum’s permanent exhibitions include the following:

All of these exhibitions were put in place in October 1994 and are open to the public up to this day.
