Enhancing your outdoor living space can add value to your home

September 6th, 2016 | Higgins Group Real Estate

In today’s market, one of the most effective ways to improve your property value is to create or enhance your home’s outdoor living spaces.

These days, many residents are looking to spend more time outdoors. This has become increasingly evident especially in tight suburban communities, where you can see more and more developers adding private courtyards and outdoor amenities such as grilling areas and pools. People want to feel connected to the outdoors, so it makes perfect sense that homes which can offer this are more appealing, and are therefore much more valuable.

If you’re looking for ways to expand or improve your home’s outdoor living spaces, below are a few helpful tips:
Home Improvement

  • Enhance kitchen space by adding an al fresco dining area. Your kitchen is a common gathering spot for family members as well as guests, so creating an outdoor dining area complete with a BBQ grill or a stone fireplace will be a perfect addition.
  • Outdoor lighting is useful for two reasons: it’ll make your outdoor living spaces safer, and it will set the mood as well. Strategically placed deck or outdoor lighting can highlight the area’s best features, while allowing less attractive elements to fade into the shadows. If you’re going for a more natural look, consider using torches or lanterns to create softer glows.
  • Water features can add a feeling of serenity to your outdoor living space. The good news is, if you’re working with a tight budget, you don’t have to spend on elaborate koi ponds or cascading waterfalls – many hardware or gardening stores carry small to medium-sized fountains which can be mounted on walls or placed on tabletops or pedestals.
  • Bold and bright colors can be overwhelming when used indoors, but they’re perfect for outdoor spaces. Complement the earthy tones by adding a touch of whimsy – use bright blue furniture, colorful cushions, Chinese paper lanterns – anything to add more color to your outdoor area.
