Benefits of Living near the Water

August 4th, 2016 | Higgins Group Real Estate

Waterfront LivingWhat makes living near the water so enticing? For many people, the breathtaking views and easy access to beach are two of the top reasons for buying a waterfront home. But while enjoying gorgeous sunsets and relaxing on the sand any time you wish are certainly great reasons to live near the ocean, there are several benefits you may not be aware of.

Better sleep

Have you ever noticed why you sleep a little bit better after spending a day at the beach? It’s because sea air contains healthy negative ions that enhance our body’s ability to absorb oxygen. Negative ions also help increase serotonin, a natural chemical that affects our mood levels. When you’re regularly exposed to ocean air, you’re likely to feel more upbeat, relaxed, and more alert.

Soothing sounds of the ocean

According to studies, just listening to the sound of waves can help you reach a deeply relaxed state. The constant sound of waves can alter patterns in our brains, helping us feel more at ease. If you’re coming home after a long day at work, listening to the soft sound of waves hitting the shore is a great way to de-stress and rejuvenate both your mind and body.

Float on

Swimming is both an enjoyable and therapeutic activity. When we’re floating in water, blood from our lower limbs flows towards our abdominal region, which is close to our hearts. As we’re floating, our bodies are not positioned upright, which means there’s more fresh blood flowing throughout our nervous system, bringing more oxygen to our brain, and making us feel more alert and active.

Sun is good for the skin

A certain amount of sunlight can provide many benefits to our skin. In fact, chronic skin issues such as psoriasis can be treated using heat from the sun, as sun rays contain a small amount of ultraviolet radiation, which can help dry the skin, and allow it to regenerate.
