Fall Yard Cleaning Tips

December 5th, 2016 | Higgins Group Real Estate

Fall-Cleaning-TipsAfter the trick-or-treating and trips to the pumpkin patch, it’s time to start preparing for winter, which means cleaning up your yard. Sure you may need a bit of elbow grease for this, but the best thing about preparing your yard means you save plenty of time and energy once spring arrives.

In order for you to get the most out of your yard next year, here are a few handy tips:

Don’t forget to water your lawn

Winter may be approaching, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have to water your lawn. Watering is very important during the fall.

What you need to do is to water your lawn until the soil is completely soaked. Afterwards, you need to soak it again. Cold temperatures can clog the soil with ice, giving your lawn very little breathing room.

Mow the lawn

It’s a great idea to mow your lawn one last time before winter arrives. Remember to cut the grass very short – this will give your lawn ample breathing space.

Clean and prepare your tools for the spring

After mowing your lawn, perform a quick inspection and cleaning on your lawnmower. Make sure the engine does not have any leftover gas, as this can clog the carburetor. Apply grease to the pull cord and any metal parts that are prone to rust.

Grease up all of your garden tools as well, as the cold weather may cause them to rust.

Clear your rain gutters

You can’t have any clogged rain gutters during the winter. Get rid of the accumulated debris by using a hose or a hand shovel to ensure proper drainage.

Trim your trees

Fall is an excellent time to trim your trees. Make use of chainsaw to cut down heavy branches and some pruning shears for the smaller ones.
