Family-Friendly Fun at Lake Mohegan

Lake Mohegan
Located off Morehouse Highway, Lake Mohegan and its surrounding area encompasses more than 170 acres, offering a relaxing environment for residents looking forward to spending time outdoors.

The lake’s vast open space, along with its network of hiking trails is administered by the Conservation Commission, while its swimming area is under the management of the Parks and Recreation Commission.

A popular summer destination for families

Summer is an excellent time to visit Lake Mohegan, as the man-made freshwater lake is made accessible to swimmers looking for a refreshing dip. The swimming area is supervised by lifeguards, and ropes serve as markers to indicate water depth, making it a safe place to swim for visitors of all ages. Swimming lessons for ages four and above are also available, courtesy of the Fairfield Parks and Recreation.

For those looking forward to relaxing on the beach while reading a book, enjoying a picnic, or simply admiring the gorgeous views, bringing a beach umbrella is a must, as there’s limited natural shade.

Kids can also enjoy playing at the sprinkler park, which was built and paid for by the Safe Parks and Recreation for Kids (SPARK), a volunteer organization. The park features multiple spouts, sprinklers, and mist makers, making it a fun place to play for kids.

Hiking trails

Nature lovers can go for a scenic hike at the Lake Mohegan Recreation Area’s 2.5-mile trail, which features lots of picturesque views. The trail is well-cleared and easy to navigate, and should take most hikers around 90 minutes to complete. Keep in mind that certain parts of the trail have uphill descents, which may pose a bit of a challenge for children.
