Stratford, CT Real Estate and Homes for Sale

Stratford Town Profile

Founded in 1639, Stratford is a quiet, charming seaside town, rich in history and abundant natural beauty. Situated on Long Island Sound, bounded to the east by the Housatonic River, Stratford is the easternmost town in Fairfield County.

The town is easily accessible to I-95 and the Merritt Parkway, offering convenient travel in all directions. There is a local Metro North train station providing service to Grand Central Station in New York. Sikorsky Memorial Airport in town offers commuter flights; Tweed-New Haven Regional and Westchester County Airports are less than an hour away; and La Guardia and JFK International Airports are a bit farther.

Well-known for its production of machine products, chemicals, and hardware, Stratford became the birthplace of the American helicopter industry when in 1939, a Russian immigrant, Igor Sikorsky, successfully flew the first helicopter at his Stratford-based aircraft plant. Sikorsky Aircraft, the world’s leading helicopter manufacturer, still designs and produces state-of-the art helicopters for both military and commercial applications at its manufacturing facility on Stratford’s north side.

Stratford’s school system offers 7 elementary schools, 2 elementary magnet schools, 2 middle schools, and 2 high schools.

The town is rich in its cultural heritage, ranging from the 250-acre, town-owned Roosevelt Forest to the Great Meadows Salt Marsh. Stratford is host to a variety of cultural attractions, including the soon to be revitalized Shakespeare Theatre and Boothe Memorial Park, a municipally-owned park and museum showcasing an assortment of architecturally-unique structures and vast collection of Americana. The Captain David Judson House and the Catharine B. Mitchell Museum create a small complex known as the Stratford Historical Society. Here, curious visitors will find a wealth of information about the town.

The city-owned Short Beach Park, adjacent to the beach community of Lordship, abounds with ball fields, a playground, nine-hole golf course, miniature golf, tennis, and more. The sand pit at Long Beach offers some of the best beach walking in Fairfield County.

Long Beach Skateland, an old-fashioned roller-skating rink owned and operated by the same family for more than forty years, hosts a competition team that still practices there. Speaking of teams, we would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the Brakettes, recognized as the greatest organized women’s sports franchise of all time. The team’s 27 National Championships are unparalleled, and only approached by Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees’ 26
